End-of-summer clearance: what’s actually worth it

September brings orange “clearance” stickers. Some summer pieces at 50% off are real deals for next year. Others are dead stock you’ll never use. Filter.

Yes: durable and storable

Solid garden tools, covers, some chairs/tables if condition and storage space are OK. A discontinued new BBQ if you already needed one.

Check parts and off-season warranty: a store may be slower to fix a grill in January.

No: seasonal perishable and fashion

Pool chemicals near expiry, dying plants, trendy décor you won’t like in June. 70% off doesn’t pay for the storage bin or the guilt.

“Summer” clothes in the wrong size/taste: the price doesn’t buy wear.

A/C and fans

A portable A/C in September can be a good price—if you’ll keep it and the power draw is acceptable. Read BTU, not the %.

Open-box: test before you leave. A noisy “like new” unit isn’t a deal.

Count space, not just %

A patio set at 40% off that sleeps 8 months in the garage costs square metres. If you don’t have room, it isn’t a discount.

Measure before you buy. Off-season returns can be stricter.

Compare two banners, then stop

On PromoSimple, 2 nearby flyers are enough. A 4-store tour “for $20 more” on a rarely used summer item is a bad time/money trade.

If it wasn’t on a list before clearance, demand a clear use for 2027. Otherwise skip.

Storable + real need + space. PromoSimple shows clearance; your garage (and next June) vote—not the orange sticker.
