List vs browsing: why flyers fill the cart

The flyer is a menu. The store is a maze designed to pull you off path. Without a list, “I was just looking” becomes $60 extra. Here are concrete guardrails.

Write it before you enter, not in the aisle

3–12 lines max, anchored on what you came for + 1–2 truly useful deals. The rest of the page stays out.

On PromoSimple, decide at home. The parking lot isn’t an office.

A money cap, not “I’ll see”

Set a max before you walk in (even $40). Off-list deals fit under that cap or wait.

A basket (not a cart) for a small stop cuts impulse volume.

Aisle = mission

Go to the list aisles. Endcaps and tills are traps even “on special”.

If an item is out, don’t replace it with a pricier neighbour “so I don’t come back”. Come back or substitute at a comparable price.

The flyer isn’t homework

You don’t have to “use” every page. A banner wins if 2 items on your list are truly cheaper there—not if 20 stickers blink.

A second store only if net gain (price − trip − impulses) is clear.

After: 2 minutes

What wasn’t on the list? If it’s recurring, add it to the template. If it’s noise, log it as impulse cost—it calms the next visit.

A price alert (when enabled) beats the weekly “I’ll just pop in”.

Short list, cap, mission aisles. PromoSimple shows deals; the list stops the flyer from becoming a second rent.
