Black Friday 2026: when real deals drop (and how to spot them)

In 2026, Black Friday falls on November 27. But in Canada, major retailers' sales often start one to two weeks earlier — and not every advertised discount is a real one. Here is the actual calendar and the method to avoid paying the inflated “was” price.

The real sales calendar

Mid-November: Canadian Tire, Walmart and Best Buy launch “early Black Friday” sales online. This is often where the best prices land on toys and small appliances — before stock runs out.

Week of the 23rd: most Black Friday flyers are published. Online deals typically go live Thursday night, sometimes Wednesday.

Friday, November 27: the day itself, followed by Cyber Monday (November 30), which mostly extends the same prices — rarely better, except on web-only items.

“Was” price vs observed price

The reflex to avoid: comparing the sale price to the retailer's advertised “regular” price. Some flyers inflate that reference price a few weeks before the sale.

On PromoSimple, every deal is compared against the actually observed regular price and the typical price of recent weeks. A “−40%” that starts from a price never seen is not a deal — it's a signal to wait.

Simple rule: a real Black Friday discount usually sits 15–30% below the typical price of the last 8 weeks, not below a theoretical price.

Categories where Black Friday actually wins

TVs and sound bars: historically the best weekend of the year, especially on last year's models.

Toys, video games and small appliances (coffee makers, air fryers, robot vacuums): strong discounts but limited stock — buy early in the week.

Tools and hardware: Canadian Tire and Home Depot run their biggest fall sales — compare both banners, the same brands alternate.

The target-price + alert method

List the 3–5 items that matter, with the exact model (SKU) — a discount on a stripped-down version isn't comparable.

Set a realistic target price from the observed price, not the advertised one. On PromoSimple, create a price alert per item: you're notified as soon as it drops below your threshold, without watching 10 flyers.

When the threshold is hit, buy — waiting for “a better Friday” more often loses the item than gains 5%.

After Black Friday

Cyber Monday: an extension of the same prices, useful if you missed the weekend — not a magic second chance.

Boxing Day (December 26): better for year-end clearance and major appliances, but only for the models and sizes left.

What didn't drop on Black Friday will rarely drop on Boxing Day — and vice versa. Decide by category, not by date.

Calendar, observed price, target price: that's all it takes to beat Black Friday. PromoSimple tracks flyers and price history — your alert does the rest.
